Importance of Enabling CAPTCHA

It’s no surprise that in recent years, there has been a large influx of online hackers. How can you ensure your website is not a victim of authorization testing by these hackers? Two steps you can take are ensuring your business is PCI compliant, and enabling CAPTCHA. Let’s dive into CAPTCHA.

What is CAPTCHA?

CAPTCHA stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.” It is a simple puzzle or image that a human is able to read, but a computer has difficulty with. For example, a website with CAPTCHA enabled may ask you to check all the boxes with stoplights. This is a task a computer will not be able to complete, as they were designed to keep bots and other artificial intelligence from doing so. Humans often times even have difficulties completing them.

Why do I need to enable CAPTCHA?

CAPTCHA technology can prevent brute force attacks on websites. In the credit card industry, there are hackers that create bots to test cards in order to find out if they work or not. This is known as “auth testing.” Hackers can test thousands of cards in a short timespan. This form of attack on your website can cost a merchant. Processors charge an authorization fee, so every card that is tested is costing your business money.

Be sure to keep your website secure by taking preventative measures such as being PCI compliant, and adding CAPTCHA. Doing so will ensure you are fighting against cyber attacks that could be harmful to your business.
